emraldeyedauter who prompted “first time I ever saw your face’ for my A-Z Drabble Meme.
I took the idea of the first time he saw her face for a different sort of event. Why not seeing her again for what feels like the first time?
Home Coming
“Lorien, keep that steady,” the Doctor called as the TARDIS started the materialization process.
“Got it, Daddy.”
She kept the paperweight rolled into place and held tightly to the handle of the vector tracker, so it wouldn’t migrate off course.
They had landed with a soft thump.
The Doctor turned the view screen toward him and double checked their coordinates as he quickly flipped a few switches and pumped a few cranks. Alan threw his entire weight down on the hand break to lock it into place.
“Are we in the right place,” he asked his father, once the break had clicked.
“We are,” the Doctor confirmed, adjusting the level of the screen so his children could read it. “See?”
“That is the right time, isn’t it?” Lorien asked, pointing to the group of characters rotating in the corner.
Pulling his glasses out of his pocket, the Doctor looked at the readings a little more closely just to be sure he hadn’t missed anything. He hoped he’d gotten the time correct, or he would never hear the end of it. Thankfully, his confirmation wasn’t needed because a very familiar scraping sound echoed as a key slid into the lock.
“Mummy!” Alan exclaimed.
The little boy popped up from his perch behind the console, his face beaming brighter than his ginger hair.
Bubbling with equal enthusiasm, the Doctor turned toward the door expectantly. Three weeks was far too long to go without seeing her. TARDIS communication systems simply couldn’t compensate for the lack of her presence. His hearts quickened pace as her key turned in the lock and the door began to open.
It felt like he hadn’t seen her in years.
He tried to hold himself together, perhaps to retain some sort of dignity in front of his children-- not that they actually saw him as being dignified--but any chance of that was lost when the one face he wanted to see appeared in doorway.
Rose’s face was dirty and smudged, and her hair was a wild mess, having escaped from its elastic band hours ago. She looked tired but terribly proud of herself with bright smile beaming up at him. Her cheeks were flushed and her chest was heaving as she fought to catch her breath. Only pausing for the briefest of moments, she launched herself up the ramp toward him, running full pelt.
More than willing to help shorten the distance between them, the Doctor stepped forward and swept her into his arms, letting her momentum spin them around.
She’d done just what she’d set out to do, and he couldn’t be prouder.
Holding her tightly to him, he told her just how wonderful she was, somewhere in the speech citing her as ‘Rose Tyler, Earth defender’, which only made her laugh. She couldn’t help but giggle and cling to him as he whispered soft praises in her ear, his breath tickling her with every sentence.
He concluded his length commentary with statements of how she should never ever leave him again, each one punctuated by a kiss to her cheek, her chin, and her lips.
Rose looped her arms around his neck as she deepened the kiss, pressing her body firmly against his.
Things might have progressed farther had Lillian not cleared her throat and presented her mother with her squirming baby sister. Rose laughed and took the baby from her daughter's arms, grinning up at the Doctor, the twinkle in her eyes telling him they would continue this later.
Right now there were other people he needed to greet.
Author's Note: This is part of a larger story that falls into the Barcelona 'verse, as any readers of that series might notice, given the children's names. It is a project I plan to start once I actually complete Through the Glass.
On a side note, I have put myself up for auction on

Date: 2010-03-24 04:18 pm (UTC)It takes place after a story that has yet to be written. If I can ever get myself to actually finish Through the Glass, I might toy with the idea more, as it belongs in that universe. More or less going back to the other universe to get Jackie and everyone.
It also takes place a few hours before that crack smut fic I posted under a lock on my fic journal.
