The Haunting of Hill House
Oct. 19th, 2018 09:54 amI recently found out about the new Netflix series that's roughly based on the book and I am so curious, but I know I shouldn't watch it. Not only is most horror not really my thing, it's just if it has any of the essence of the book, it will be creepy as anything.
I love the book, which is ridiculous. The blasted thing gives me nightmares. And yet I reread it every few years.
Last night I started re-reading it again.
I keep forgetting how much I identified with different parts of Eleanor's story every time I read it. Living in controlling situation after controlling situation until she finally gets a chance to escape.
And all the daydreaming about possible lives in all the houses she drives by on the way to Hill House. That's glorious. The stone lions, the oleanders, and everything else. She's still so positive, even when her adult life has been an unhappy one.
Unfortunately, I don't remember half of it - as is typical for me. I keep forgetting little details.
Like I never noticed that Theo's introduction is totally her breaking up with her girlfriend. "Friend" my foot. That is totally a dramatic breakup.

Date: 2018-10-27 09:18 am (UTC)I've been able to finally get some of my questions about horror movies answered (aka how icky is it?) thanks to Junior's discovery of Nostalgia Critic on YT. We've been watching his reviews and they are hilarious. It's the only way I can tolerate Steven King movies. (Not that they scare me so much as make me want to face palm and headdesk at the same time)
